About Jawbone Walk
Jawbone Walk serves up the spirit of 50’s era Chicago - with a strong shot of Mississippi Hill Country blues and a chaser of gospel. Featuring Ewan Gibson on bass, Vid Gobac on drums, Luke Cunningham on keys, and raconteur Toby Mottershead on guitars and vocals.
The band take inspiration from the classic styles or pre war Delta blues, post war Chicago blues and rhythm ’n’ blues and all these wonderful styles that make up blues music. Three members of the band (Toby Mottershead, Ewan Gibson, Vid Gobac) have been recently teaching community workshops on these styles. One of the things we always try to get across to our students is: that much as it is great to pay homage to classic recordings, we have to also bring some originality to the genre; in order to keep it alive, tending the flames, not worshipping the ashes.
This was the real impetus in forming this band, to take the classic blues mould and to add our own creativity to it, to imbue it with life, keep the tradition alive; respectful of what has gone before whilst moving forward and creating something relevant to our own place in time.
